La Mesa Mas Fantastica

Every year, my school puts on a Grandparents' Dinner and Silent Auction. Each class is asked to contribute something to the auction, and conventional wisdom suggests that items that represent the creative efforts of the students sell for the most money. I stumbled upon inspiration in the form of a black wire table frame at Laverty's a few weeks ago, and Stephen was given the mighty task of attaching a table top to the frame so that I could do a tiling project on top of it.

I took my seventeen students to Practically Pikasso, where they each painted a tile with one of their initials. The color choices were strictly limited, so the resulting tabletop was nicely coordinated. KarenD and I went back to the studio and painted three more tiles (our masterpieces are the d, H, and W in the third row) so that we'd have an even twenty to make a grid. We used small matching tiles to fill in the border when my measurements turned out to be a little on the small side.

I did the decorative arranging, and Stephen did the hard work of spreading the mortar and grout, and the result was a personalized, yet quite attractive tabletop.

The students each brought money to pay for their own tiles, and the rest of the materials cost about $100 or a little less, but it was worth the investment when the table was auctioned off for a whopping
one thousand dollars.

P.S. You don't have to tell me that someone got ripped off. It was a fundraising auction, so it's all in good fun.

The results were even better than I imagined. They got a bargain.

Why did you put the H on there? And does the top row spell "bark?" That makes me laugh. The table looks great! I'm impressed! I'd like a table like that in my house...I think I'll put it in my sun room.

Hey, if I had a thousand bucks to spend on a table, I'd have a sun room! :)

Great job for your class, and excellent way to raise a good amount of money!

You didn't tell us about the auction? I would have come. Why was there no play this year?

They did the play another night. It was just the auction and a catered-sandwich dinner at Truett. Sorry...I forgot that you are an auction fan.

If you're interested in elementary school theater, though, write down APRIL 26 on your calendar. The fourth and fifth graders are doing their end of year play. It will be super cute.

@ Lydia- I had to try to keep the colors varied. "Bark" had to be done- it was either that or "Bars"

The H is just for fun because we didn't have one. It is also my maiden initial, so it works.

Ah, yes, the whimsical "d." I guess it turned out OK. The table looks amazing! Such a fun project, I bet your kiddos were proud!

Is the 26th when they'll do the play you wrote? Aw man, I want to see it! But I'll be out of the country then.

I accessed AirBear today for the first time... we should plan a Starbucks work-date soon. :-)

That is really pretty! Good idea to limit the colors so that it all coordinated.
